Several years ago I was quite surprised when I was informed of a very unique setting in Cades Cove, a section of Smoky Mountain National. The only reason I was made aware of this incredible location was because a black bear had brought traffic to a standstill. As I waited in my car, I spotted another photographer heading my direction carrying a tripod. I inquired of her destination only to find out about the spot I later named “The Phantom”. The title seemed right because this particular section of woods only holds water once every seven years or so.
The setting was tranquil and the green that covered the landscape was my favorite early Spring green. The color only lasts for a week or so and then the darker greens that exist throughout the Summer months set in. The beauty of the shallow water, reflections and Spring bloom is something I will not forget. As with all of the images I have produced, the experience of capturing the scene is clear in my mind yet today. The good thing is that we know this type of day will be here soon. It is not always easy to envision after a Winter like this one. Take some time and enjoy the special moments of Spring. It is my favorite time of year!
