This image was captured at Oceanside, Oregon where I spent several days attempting to photograph this particular stretch of beach. On this evening the weather was horrid. I was hit by wind, rain, sleet and hail within a thirty minute period. As thoughts of giving up ran through my head, the sun briefly broke through the clouds and illuminated the rocks to my right.
While standing with my tripod at the surf’s edge, I noticed a larger than normal wave approaching and I had to make a quick decision – wet or dry feet and wet camera or safe camera. I decided to make the bold move to leave my camera/tripod and retreat to dry land about 50 feet away. The wave proved to be larger than I thought and as I viewed my camera from 50 feet away, I realized leaving my gear in harm’s way wasn’t a risk I wanted to take. Forgetting about wet feet, I ran to my camera and reached for the cable release firing one shot as the water receded. The end result was this image, Rogue Retreat. Not the most elegant or professional way of capturing this shot, but the truth. In this case, good to be lucky.
