Both the Upper and Lower Antelope Slot Canyons are incredible places to visit. My favorite is the Lower Canyon which requires a little more effort to navigate, but is well worth it. On this visit to the Lower Canyon a Navajo guide told me where to watch for a stream of light to break through an opening in the ceiling at about 10:45am. I took his advice and set up 30 minutes in advance and waited anxiously. Exactly as my guide predicted, the light arrived and illuminated the sand about 15 feet from where I stood. The best way to get a canyon light shaft to glow is by throwing sand in the air.
At my request, my cousin Jim took on the difficult task of tossing sand and getting out of the way, as the shaft is visible only for a couple of seconds. I was worried about all the sand falling on my camera and lens, but it was a chance I had to take. After three or four attempts the sand reached the necessary height and filled the entire light shaft. The end result is an image I will alway cherish and never forget.
