A bear had been sited in Smoky Mountain National causing curious folks hoping to catch a glimpse to stop and park their cars on the single lane road of Cades Cove. As I impatiently sat in my vehicle I spotted another photographer walking my way with a tripod hoisted over her shoulder. I asked where she was headed and she replied, “the swamp”. That was news to me, so I parked along the edge of the road and headed in the same direction only to fine a beautiful area of shallow water and trees featuring my favorite early Spring green. As it turns out, this particular area holds water only in the Spring and on average only once every seven years. The beauty of the place captured my attention and I made the 70 mile round trip for the next three days attempting to capture the best light possible. The end result is an image that surprises most people when they hear that the location is Smoky Mountain National. Given it’s surprising location and infrequent appearances, I felt that “The Phantom” was an appropriate title.
