I do some pretty interesting things to position myself at the right place and time to capture a special image. The journey to capture this image was certainly no exception. I, along with my Cousin Jim and our Navajo guide started a two-hour off road journey late in the afternoon. With a special off road vehicle we crossed incredible sand dunes and climbed rock formations for ten miles before reaching our destination at Hunts Mesa. I took an hour and scouted locations that might serve best for capturing the view of Monument Valley to the north. Our guide gathered firewood for a campfire used to prepare a steak and beans dinner and we retired to a breathtaking view of the Milky Way, visible through the mesh roof of my small tent. At 4:30 the following morning I literally rolled out of my tent, set up my camera and captured the sun rising over the Valley. I knew I had the shot I was after when I saw the sun peak over the rocks to my right. I’ll never forget what it was like standing on the edge of the rocks that morning, because this image depicts exactly what I saw. Our trip off the Mesa was no less exciting than the one of the previous day. What a trip, what an image!
